Environmental Management

ISO 14001 Certification

Third-party ISO 14001 certification from an IAS-accredited certification body. Meet supply-chain environmental requirements, back your sustainability commitments with an audited system, and qualify for the bids that ask for it.

The Standard

What Is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 (ISO 14001:2015 and the current ISO 14001:2026 revision) is the international standard for environmental management systems (EMS). It defines how an organization identifies its environmental impacts, meets its compliance obligations, and continually improves performance, from resource use and waste to emissions and lifecycle thinking.

Certification means an accredited, independent certification body has audited your EMS in operation and confirmed it conforms to the standard. It turns sustainability claims into verified practice.

Why Certify

Why Organizations Get ISO 14001 Certified

Meet Supplier Requirements

Large manufacturers, utilities, and government buyers push environmental requirements down their supply chains. Certification answers them.

Back ESG Commitments

An audited EMS gives substance to sustainability reporting instead of unverifiable claims.

Stay Ahead of Regulation

A systematic approach to compliance obligations reduces violations, fines, and surprises.

  • Recognized worldwide through IAF multilateral recognition
  • Commonly required in construction, manufacturing, and public-sector supply chains
  • Integrates with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 for combined audits on one management system
The Process

How ISO 14001 Certification Works

GMCS runs a defined, two-stage certification audit. You always know where you are in the process and what comes next.

1. Quote and applicationTell us your size, sites, and timeline. We scope the audit program and send a proposal.
2. Optional pre-assessmentA readiness audit that finds gaps before the certification audit. Recommended for first-time certifications.
3. Stage 1 auditReview of your documented EMS and confirmation you are ready for Stage 2.
4. Stage 2 auditThe certification audit: your system evaluated in operation against ISO 14001 requirements.
5. CertificationCertificate issued on closure of findings, verifiable on IAF CertSearch.
6. Surveillance and recertificationAnnual surveillance audits maintain the certificate; recertification renews it at year three.
Cost

What Determines ISO 14001 Certification Cost

There is no one-size price. Your quote is scoped from audit time, which is driven by four factors. Organizations with fewer than 100 employees qualify for the GMCS Small Organization Program's discounted pricing.

Transfers

Already ISO 14001 Certified? Transfer to GMCS.

If your current certification body is slow to schedule, slow to answer, or priced for someone else's overhead, transfer your accredited certificate to GMCS. Your certification cycle and surveillance schedule continue uninterrupted, and in most cases there is no repeat of Stage 1 and Stage 2.

FAQ

ISO 14001 Certification Questions

Can ISO 14001 be audited together with ISO 9001?
Yes. The standards share the same management system structure, and GMCS can run integrated audits covering both, which reduces total audit time compared to certifying separately.
How long does ISO 14001 certification take?
Timing depends on the readiness of your EMS. Once your system is documented and in operation, certification is a two-stage audit, and many organizations complete it within a few months.
How much does ISO 14001 certification cost?
Cost is driven by organization size, number of sites, and the environmental complexity of your operations. GMCS maintains discounted pricing for organizations with fewer than 100 employees.
How long is an ISO 14001 certificate valid?
Three years, maintained by annual surveillance audits, followed by a recertification audit at the end of the cycle.
Can we transfer our existing ISO 14001 certificate to GMCS?
Yes. An existing accredited certificate can transfer to GMCS without restarting your certification cycle.
Does GMCS provide ISO 14001 consulting?
No. GMCS is an independent certification body. Accreditation rules prohibit certifying a system we helped build, and that independence is what keeps your certificate credible.
