Energy Management

ISO 50001 Certification

Independent third-party ISO 50001 certification for organizations that want to manage energy use systematically, cut costs, and prove measurable energy performance improvement.

The Standard

What Is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001:2018 is the international standard for energy management systems (EnMS). It requires an organization to understand its significant energy uses, set an energy baseline and energy performance indicators, and show continual improvement in energy performance.

Unlike many management system standards, ISO 50001 expects measurable results, not just documented processes. Certification means an independent auditor has confirmed your energy management system is in operation and delivering improvement.

Why Certify

Why Organizations Get ISO 50001 Certified

Lower Energy Costs

A structured EnMS finds and controls your largest energy uses, turning savings into a managed, repeatable process.

Back Up Sustainability Claims

Customers, investors, and supply-chain programs want verified energy and carbon performance, not estimates.

Prove Improvement

Energy baselines and performance indicators give you data that stands up to customer, board, and auditor scrutiny.

  • Fits manufacturers, data centers, campuses, facilities, and public-sector buildings
  • Integrates with ISO 14001 on a shared audit program
  • Requires demonstrated energy performance improvement, which makes the certificate meaningful
The Process

How ISO 50001 Certification Works

GMCS runs a defined, two-stage certification audit. You always know where you are in the process and what comes next.

1. Quote and applicationTell us your size, sites, and timeline. We scope the audit program and send a proposal.
2. Optional pre-assessmentA readiness audit that finds gaps before the certification audit. Recommended for first-time certifications.
3. Stage 1 auditReview of your documented energy management system and confirmation you are ready for Stage 2.
4. Stage 2 auditThe certification audit: your system evaluated in operation against ISO 50001 requirements.
5. CertificationCertificate issued once any audit findings are closed.
6. Surveillance and recertificationAnnual surveillance audits maintain the certificate; recertification renews it at year three.
Cost

What Determines ISO 50001 Certification Cost

There is no one-size price. Your quote is scoped from audit time, which is driven by four factors. Organizations with fewer than 100 employees qualify for the GMCS Small Organization Program's discounted pricing.

Transfers

Already ISO 50001 Certified? Transfer to GMCS.

If your current certification body is slow to schedule, slow to answer, or priced for someone else's overhead, transfer your certificate to GMCS. Your certification cycle and surveillance schedule continue, and in most cases there is no repeat of Stage 1 and Stage 2.

FAQ

ISO 50001 Certification Questions

What is the difference between ISO 50001 and ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 covers all environmental aspects of your operations. ISO 50001 focuses on energy and requires measured improvement in energy performance. Many organizations hold both on one integrated audit program.
Do we have to show energy savings to get certified?
You have to show improvement in energy performance against your energy baseline, measured with energy performance indicators. That improvement is part of what auditors verify.
How long does ISO 50001 certification take?
Timing depends on how much energy data you already collect. Once your baseline, indicators, and action plans are in operation, certification is a two-stage audit. GMCS scopes your timeline in the quote.
How much does ISO 50001 certification cost?
Cost is driven by your energy consumption, the number of significant energy uses, number of sites, and headcount working on energy performance. GMCS maintains discounted pricing for organizations with fewer than 100 employees.
Can we transfer our existing ISO 50001 certificate to GMCS?
In most cases, yes. GMCS reviews your current certificate and audit history, and your certification cycle continues without starting over.
Does GMCS provide energy consulting?
No. GMCS is an independent certification body. Certification body rules prohibit certifying a system we helped build, and that independence keeps your certificate credible.
